Change Issue Reporter Field

Bill OLeary

September 17, 2020

I create alot of issues for my customers...

when I do, I am the default reporter and often times I forget to update to the actual customer before finishing the creation

so I want to change the Reporter afterwards

I have setup my screens so that the Reporter Field is available in all of my workflows

but when I select the reporter field on any subsequent screen, it  cannot find my customer name ...

I thought I figured it out while I was writing this up since I don't have an organization set for this issue, but I set the organization and it still won't find my customers names

It only lets me select Anonymous

Hmm.  Two thoughts which might not seem intuitive (because they aren't)

  1. Can you check your global permissions for the right to "browse users"?  You don't need to go into admin to do this, you can check by trying to change the assignee on another issue, starting to type a name, or starting an @mention in a text or comment box.  If it starts to suggest people to auto-complete, then you have the permission to browse users
  2. Who has permission to create issues in this project?

so I am the only user in this project..

In your simple test I can type and assign myself as the user and it completes it for me

My registered customers can create issues remotely...

@mention doesn't seem to do anything for me

Is there an easy way to get to the browse_user permission settings? I really struggle to find these things

Global admin cog -> System -> Security -> Global Permissions

Or cheat a bit - replace "yoursitename" in https://yoursitename.atlassian.net/secure/admin/GlobalPermissions!default.jspa

On the user permissions, I'd like us to look directly at the permissions for the project (I don't need to see them, just have an understanding of what one of them says).  If you go to the project as normal, then find and click the "project settings" on the left, there should be a load of settings, maybe 3/4 way down, there should be "permissions".  Hit that and then look at the main panel - there's a huge pile of permissions, but around the 10th one is "create issues".

The one I have open says Create Issue is given to
• Project Role (atlassian-addons-project-access)
• Project Role (Cat)
• Group (TIN-developers)

You can see these equate to rules about who can create, we just need to know who might end up being selected here, because this is, indirectly, limiting the "reporter" field.

I noticed my role was only project admin, so I also added all the other roles to my user name... I thought that might help, but it didn't appear to

Ok, great that you've done that, it's an excellent test, but I'm sorry that all it does is rule out that being the problem.

As you've ruled out the browse-users as well, I am stuck.

I can only hope the support call finds it for us!  I'd be really grateful if you could let us know if they can fix it and explain it!

Hey Nic,

You were definitely barking up the right tree.

I had to add access to browse UserNames to all of my Groups ...

I just couldn't figure out how to access and then use that permission menu properly...

Especially since you have to add Public to be able to see the groups you want to really add and then delete Public after you add the ones you want

hopefully you can see this Issue link?

so are you saying you can select the customer during the create but not after? that is quite odd if so. the fact that you don't see any customers in the drop down makes me think there are no customer associated w/ the project. I don't get the anonymous user name is that an artifact of setting customer permissions to "anyone can send a request w/o logging in"?

Yes, thats what I'm saying..

and if you saw, I was able to set the Organization field of the issue to the proper customer and I tried to change the reporter again and I still don't get any names...

My own name doesn't show up as a choice either

what shows under Customers for this project? what shows under project settings > people?

something odd here...

other projects ok?

I agree, something odd, and this is just becoming a huge time-sink :(

When I look at Customers all  my customers are listed

(I don't want to share that screen Shot)

When I raise a request, I can set the requester to the proper

This is my only Jira Service Desk Project and I am the only  User and I show up...

Hi @Bill OLeary ,

Check the permission scheme if you have got "Modify Reporter" permissions .

As far as I can tell, It wouldn't allow me to add the

Reporter field to the screen if I didn't?

Funny I went to use the Permission Helper function to see whats going on.. .and I can't even type my own User Name in the User box..."No Matches"

The configuration of this stuff is so difficult for a user that doesn't play with it very often,,, I've spent more than an hour looking at this  this morning and have gotten no where

I believe this means I should be able to Modify reporter...

assume you are in one of those roles for Modify Reporter?

Bill OLeary

I am the only user  (besides customer portal access)

and I have all the roles...

Not sure how to prove that though...

Hi @Bill OLeary

What happens if you delete 'Anonymous' and start typing the customer name?

Regards, Liam

Bill OLeary

Nothing!

I can type the user name I want... (even my own) and it won't assign or reset it from anonymous

I just had an idea to try using the users actual email

instead of their user name in my JIRA and it still doesn't let me change it
