Automation Failing

Jamie Wilson July 18, 2023

I have a simple automation to log 0m work when an issue is updated, but only if the initiator is in a specific group. If the initiator is not within the group, the automation fails and I'm notified. I know I can turn off the notifications but want to know when it 'really' fails.

The 'Actor' is set to the 'User who Triggered the Event' to allow the work log to be assigned correctly.

What am I missing?

Thanks

To add some more info, this is what the fail message looks like:

The thing that is confusing me is that in this (and all the other fails) the Actor (which is the person who triggered the event) isn't in the Conditional Group, so no further actions should be taken.

Hi @Jamie Wilson - Please confirm my assumptions:

  • This is a JSM issue
  • The user who triggered the rule is a customer

If these assumptions are true, then you need to rethink the actor and/or the trigger.  A customer could trigger an issue update by virtue of adding a comment or executing a customer-facing transition.  Jira Automation then tries to kick in and will immediately fail before you get to the first condition because it is saying "wait a minute, I can't process this because the actor is someone who only has customer permissions"

You have a few choices:

  1. Identify a mechanism for triggering the rule that is impossible for a customer to initiate.
  2. Set a static actor and be ok with the fact that your worklog author will not be the same as the assignee
  3. If you have confidence in the rule, disable the error notifications
