Create Projects based on User Role

Jasti Venkata Sreedhar July 11, 2022

Create a project specific to users and should not view other projects.

We are in Free plan and we are able to create 'n' number of projects. The problem is all the users are able to access all the projects.

For Example: We have Project A, Project B and Project C. We have 10 users User1, User2, User3... to User10.

Project A: User1, User2 and User3 should have access and Project B and Project C should be invisible.

Project B: User4, User5 and User6 should have access and Project A and Project C should be invisible.

Project A: User7, User8, User9 and User10 should have access and Project A and Project B should be invisible.

Please let us know if this is possible in JIRA.

Hi @Jasti Venkata Sreedhar,

As @Sreenivasaraju P corrected himself in his second answer: if you are on a free plan, you cannot configure project permissions. Every user in your free plan has project administrator permissions in every project. That is a limitation of the free plan.

If you want to be able to specify different permissions on different projects, you'll need to upgrade to either the standard or premium plan.

For the official documentation, see this support article

Hope this clarifies!

Hi @Jasti Venkata Sreedhar ,

Yes. It is possible. You can use permission schema.

With permission schema, you achieve this. Please configure the Browse Projects permission to the respective user/role/group. so only they view the project.

Thank you for your quick reply but still I have an issue. Kindly help if we have another alternative.

Path: Settings --> Projects ---> Click on any Project ---> Project Settings in left panel

---> Permissions ----> Actions (drop down ---> Edit Permission)

Actual Result: Grant Permission and Update buttons are in disable state and below is the validation message.

Permissions aren't editable on the Free plan. Upgrade to customize project permissions.

Hi @Jasti Venkata Sreedhar ,

Sorry. As per my knowledge, we can't achieve without  changing permission.

As you are free plan, everyone who can access that product is a project admin. It isn't possible to change the permission scheme, edit roles, or add an issue security scheme.

Permission schemes: I did checked the Permission schemes page but Edit button is in disabled state for all the projects that we have created.

Edit Roles: Able to edit and add Project Roles but it is showing only Name and Description only. We don't see any user/group related fields.

Add an issue security scheme: Able to add/edit issue security scheme but it is showing only Name, Description and Default Security Level. We don't see any user/group related fields.

So from your previous comment, edit roles, or add an issue security scheme is possible.

Kindly help the next steps to achieve the requirement.
