How do I make a customer a Approver or add them to the Approver Group?

I feel like I'm running in circles trying to figure this one out.  I've added approvers to a couple request types but at this point the customer has the ability to type in the email address of anyone in the system.  Jira has the built in Approvers and Approvers Groups by default.  I would like to only allow customers to select or add a specific group of managers.  How do I add people to the Approvers Group or make them Approvers?

Hi Scott, have you seen this documentation? allow-customers-to-choose-approvers 

You will note that "Customers cannot add approvers in groups." i'm not sure if that's what you're actually attempting to do or not.
