Need to populate "Parent" with linked issue value

I'm trying to automate an automatic copy when the hierarchy of a ticket is changed, specifically when the linked issue is updated to "Child Of" to set the "Parent" Epic value to the appropriate ID.

Hopefully, my screenshot illustrates it better:

When I link ST-28 (Child story) to ST-27 (Parent Epic) through JIRA's linking option, I want the Epic/ Parent auto-updated.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, this is not possible.

Parent field is used to control tasks and sub-tasks relationship, which means hierarchy level. Epics are not considered parent-hierarchical related and hence you cannot populate this field.

Thanks for your input; however, with a recent change to Jira,  the epic link is replaced by Parent. Thus making the epic-link a parent-link, ergo, hierarchical.

When the Epic is manually linked, the Parent field is updated correctly (1).

I want to omit the need to manually update if it's already linked as a "Child of" (2)
