Add watcher option on JIRA ticket does not populate existing users

Péter Mátyás April 15, 2025

Dear community,

It seems, add watcher option on JIRA ticket does not populate existing users.

It does not even accept a user, if I type the user name.JIRA_Issue_2.pngJIRA_Issue.png

If I could assign the ticket to a certain user, why is it impossible to add as watcher?

Thank you community!

Peter

Dear community,

Thank you for the hints!
The solution was to add my user to jira-software-users group as well.

It seems, the jira-admin gives you the role to manage JIRA tickets, but does not work all the features.

Regards,

Peter

Hey @Péter Mátyás

Welcome to the Community!

Have you checked if the users have the "View Voters and Watchers" permission as referred here in the below documentation

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/watch-share-and-comment-on-an-issue

Thanks,
Pramodh

Hey Pramodh,

I'm JIRA admin. I have the permission,

Tha problem is, JIRA does not populate/accept users that I type in the field.

Thanks,

Peter

Hi @Péter Mátyás

Welcome to the community.

@Pramodh M and @Kris Dewachter provide right options to check.

Who do you want to set as watchers, other Jira users, or other customers?

For other customer you must use the field "Request Participants".

The "Watchers" field is only for user with a license in the system and have access to the JSM project as agent or contributor.

--> We have been using this for a while, but now, it seems it stopped working.

Hi @Péter Mátyás

Has there been a change on the permission scheme or have user been assigned a different project role?

Which role is assigned to all the users on the project and what permissions does this role has assigned on the permission scheme used in the project?

Péter Mátyás April 15, 2025

Hi Marc,

I'm project admin, there were no changes.

Hi @Péter Mátyás

And on the permission scheme used in the project, any changes there, is this a shared scheme?

Maybe a Jira admin made changes there.

Péter Mátyás April 15, 2025

Hi Marc,

No changes. It seems, JIRA just cannot read the list of users in the Watcher field.

Thanks,

Peter

Hi @Péter Mátyás

use the Permission helper in the system or let you admin check.

It has to be a permission issue.

Same issue here.

Hi @Péter Mátyás

I would reach out to your Instance admins and let them check if changes have been made.

In Jira on the Global permissions which groups are defined and are there people in these groups?

Are there changes made there or within changes Within Atlassian administration.

Hi @Péter Mátyás ,

Welcome to the Atlassian Community.

Can you check in the "Global Permissions" if you have the "Browse Users" permission.

Also, are the users you are missing active? Do you see some users, and not others ?

Best regards,

Kris

Péter Mátyás April 15, 2025

Hi Kris,

Yep, I have.

I also a member of jira-admins-company:
"Grants access to the administration features for all Jira products on company"

Also, are the users you are missing active? Do you see some users, and not others?

--> I cannot populate any of the users. Yes, they are active.

Thank you,
