Auto assign issue on creation in specific column

Marine Redon December 8, 2020

Hi,

I'm trying to do a very basic thing and yet it's not working. When a team member creates an issue in the 'design' column, I want the issue to be assigned to said user. Here's my rule:

Yet nothing happens when I create an issue in this column. The log says the issue 'did not match the condition'. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Seems odd on the surface. So I am assuming that Design is in fact a status and not just a column heading. Or is this maybe a NG project where the status = the column heading?

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure if 'status' is the right condition here, I picked what Jira suggested. There isn't 'column' in the drop down, so I'm not sure what to pick? It is a next-gen board.

Ok well if it is NG then the column heading is the status.
So when an issue is created is it in fact landing in Design column? Can you share an image of you board where a new issue has been created AND the rule did not success for said issue? When issues are first created do they land on Design, I.e. is it the leftmost column? If not maybe what you want as a trigger is “issue transitioned” and not created.

'Design' is not my left-most column. My board isn't set up for issues to go strictly from the far left to the far right at the moment.

By 'creating' I mean clicking on 'create issue' in the 'Design' column. Issue transition might be better then, but I would want the issue to be self-assigned only when the user creates the card in this column, not when they move it (there might be some back and forth for example between design and amendments).

Ok Marine, I just tried this out on my NG project and got it to work. Here is what I did...

How did you do that? I don't see an option for JQL

you don't choose "Issue fields condition". when you click on Condition type in JQL and the option should be there.

ooh you're right, I forgot I selected it in the first place. It seems to work now, thank you :)

Related: do you know how to turn off the email that says the card was assigned to you by automation?

Nevermind found it - it was under 'more options' when editing the issue.

So I don’t use NG projects but have a test one I can play with. However I was not aware that you can create an issue in any column. Can you share a screen shot as requested earlier?

I can't seem to take a screenshot with the hover state active, but basically when hovering over a column, 'Create issue' appears at the bottom.

Where would I go in JIRA to setup the condition so that when an issue is created, the issue goes to a specific column automatically
