My admin created a global custom field named Owner. We currently have about 20 projects in Jira. We added the Owner field to some of the projects and then added an actual Owner. When I put the Owner on a List, it seems as though the Owner is not in the same field. One project has the owner in the cf[10067] field and another project has it in the cf[10064] field. Wouldn't this custom field be used across all of the projects and be in the same field?
Next-gen projects do not have the notion of global fields, instead each next-gen projects is almost like it's own island. If you create a custom field in one next-gen project, it is not available for any other projects that you have. Same thing goes with custom fields that you created of your classic projects, those are not visible in a next-gen project.
well, that explains it. Does the Assignee field work the same way since it is a Jira standard field? thanks for your response.

Hi Brian,
Yes a global custom field does span all the projects. But Jira will allow you to create multiple custom fields that have the same name. Which looks like just happened. I would recommend not reusing custom field names.

thanks for the reply. So most likely our Admin may have created a global custom field but there are other custom fields with the same name tied to specific projects. Is there a way to know which are global vs not? I assume I need to remove all of the custom fields named Owner that is not the global one. of course, if I do that then I will lose any data in those fields but we are a small company and I can coordinate that with the users that may be using them.

In Custom Fields in the admin, a context is listed:
And you are correct on both counts about losing the data in those fields when you delete the duplicate custom field.

sorry to be a pest, but how did you get to the screen above? I have been given Jira Admin access but I can't seem to find what you are showing. I just see Owner on the Custom Fields screen and it says it is 1 context on 21 screens.
for some reason I can't screen print what I see
also, Owner is not a default Custom field, correct?

Hi Brian,
So you went to Jira Settings - Issues - Custom fields. Than you searched for Owner? Owner is not a Jira native field, so you should see the two custom fields.

I went to Jira Setting and the Custom Fields to see the Owner field and this is under Issues. I don't see a Jira Settings - Users. I have looked in several places.

Susan, I have deleted the Owner1 and Owner2 fields which were not global. I am down to the global Owner field. Question I have. Look at the picture below. It shows an Owner field for each project. Is that how a global custom field works - there is a column for each owner? I was hoping that the Owner for each project was in the same field. It makes it hard to do reporting across projects if the Owner custom field is in different columns. Any thoughts?

Hi Brian,
Is the Owner a multi-user picker field? Or Single-user picker field?

I have found that the Owner in one project is in one of the columns and the Owner in a different project is in a different column. only one name was selected for each task on the project.

Hi,
So when you export a custom field that is multi-select you will get that multiple column view as Jira is trying to show you all the values that were selected per issue.
Wondering why you aren't using user picker for owner if it's actually an individual(s).
Cheers,
Susan

I created a new global custom field named OwnerB. I then added it to all of the available screens. When I go into a project and try to add the new field to the Task, the new field is not listed. I have also noticed that I don't have the "Search Fields" that another person has right above the "Time Tracking". I am an Administrator in Jira and I also gave myself Administrator access to this project. Do you know why I wouldn't have this option and be able to select my new field?

Hi Brian,
If you made it global and added to all screens it should just be there. Did you try to create an issue to see if it is there?

I created an issue and I don't see it. I am using the cloud version so this is new to me. In the past I used an on-prem solution which looked different. I have very few fields on an issue in the cloud version. not sure if that is normal. giving me a headache!

for whatever reason I can't get the Global custom field to be seen on any type of issue. Should I repost this? i am not sure what else to do.

Can you paste the field configuration in here, as well as the screen configuration and the project configuration.

i do see the OwnerB field in the Screen configuration when I look at the layout...just can't add it and I never see it on a screen.

Hi,
So I see OwnerB on the "default screen". But It's not apparent to me that Astiva is using the default screen scheme? Because you don't see OwnerB in the Task screen in project Astiva. I'm not a huge cloud user,
Is Astiva a next-gen project? That might be a factor and I confess I don't use next-gen (find it far too limiting)

it is a next-gen project. this whole screen thing is new to me and I am not used to it. The OwnerB is in all 24 screens listed so that is why I don't understand why I don't see it.

I will ask some colleagues to come into this and see if they know the answer

Hi Brian, Susan (good friend) pinged me to see if I can help but I too must confess that I am not an active user of NG. With that said, unless something has changed custom fields in NG are single project only. Now maybe something has changed? Have you experienced any scenario where my understanding would be dated?

I am new to the cloud version and completely new to NG. From everything I can tell, the custom fields work the way that you state. I think a global field can be created and be selected by each project, but it stores the data separately. We can't do a query on one specific field to get all of the Owners. We have to write a different query for each project.
I will maybe create a couple of Classic projects and see if it works the way I need it too. thanks for the help...you too Susan. One last question and I think I already know the answer. My user wants to know if we an edit the way the task is shown in a board. I think the answer is no because I can't find anywhere or any documentation that says you can. see screen shot. My user wants to add the Owner field to this...not sure that can be done.

You are correct, in a next-gen project you cannot change what is being displayed on the board. This can only be done if you are using a classic project.
