Tickets go straight from Inbox to In Progress with a Jira automation causing unassignment of tickets. How can stop this and how can I can I make an automation that transitions of tickets to In Progress and assign the ticket to the person making the change?
Hi Candy:
You can achieve it by modifying the WF where when issue moves into "In Progress" by adding a post function setting the issue assignee to the person executed the transition.
Or, you can setup Automation for Jira rule to setup the same way where when issue transitioned event will trigger the issue assignee to the person triggered the rule.

Can you share some details of what your current automation rule is? It's hard to suggest a fix without knowing what's currently configured since there are lots of options with Automation.
