Virtual Agent: How to add a "Back" button in the intent conversation flow

Kelly Jennings May 22, 2025

We are building out our first few intents in Virtual service agent and I have noticed what appears to be a glaring omission from the conversation flow functionality.

Maybe I am just not seeing it but I cannot find a built-in option to give the user a "Back" button to retreat to the previous set of choices offered by the bot.

Previous chatbot-building platforms I have used all had this option. But in the Atlassian virtual agent intent conversation flow, I find myself having to duplicate my branching logic over and over again just to give the user the option to retry something, change their answer, or correct a mistaken click. This (combined with the shocking lack of functionality for copying/cloning steps or sets of steps/branches) is making my conversation flows extremely unwieldy and increasingly difficult to navigate and maintain.

From a user experience perspective, the ability to step back to a previous question is pretty basic. Users should not have to start their chatbot conversation all over again in order to correct an erroneous response.

In the conversation workflow diagram, the "Back" option should just pop the execution back up to the most recent user input gate. I was building chatbots that could do this 6, 7, 8 years ago, so it's not like it's newfangled functionality.

Has anyone else figured out how to do this in an efficient manner? Am I missing something obvious here?

Edit 5/23/25: I just encountered the 50-step limit while trying to finish one of the intent flows. So now I'll just have to remove the user-friendly retry logic. I definitely didn't see this limit to the number of steps mentioned in any of the documentation. This makes the lack of the aforementioned back/retry functionality even more relevant, since the step limit will in many cases prevent you from working around it.

@Kelly Jennings I'm not sure but am really interested in the answer as well.

Having the ability to go backwards in the conversation flow does seem to be pretty important.
