Custom field data generator

Looking for a little help here. We’re in the process of doing away with a paper bound system & replacing it with a JSD project to make it self service essentially. I’m looking to see if there is any way to have a custom field auto generate a number that it would give to the user based on a selection in the portal. What would transpire is the user would go to the portal, select option A or B from a drop down or other field type and enter in some data in the description (a reason for the request) and then hit create. Once created the field would spit out a number that would be dependent on the option selected in the portal (select A & get a number that starts with 18X select by and get 18Y). Any ideas?

One option would be to define two projects. JSD uses unique issuekeys per project. Example:

project 1 = IT requests => IT-1, IT-2, ...

project 2 = Facilities requests => FAC-1, FAC-2, ...

there may may be a way to do this as you mentioned with custom field via an addon and maybe someone else has an idea on such.
